How To Identify and Correctly Treat Your Acne Problems
By Lily
When it is on your face, it may not seem to matter that there are different types of acne out there. The only thing that matters to you is that you rid yourself of the pimples as soon as humanly possible. I agree. This is why it’s important to understand the different types of acne there are so that you can discern which type of acne treatment will probably work best.
Whiteheads are the pimples that grow to be the type of acne that just screams out to be popped. This type of acne occurs when that entire pore is blocked. Popping a pimple can lead to acne scars as as the spread of acne.
Blackheads are easily recognizable because they look like little black dots on your skin. Acne treatments for blackheads may vary from other types of acne treatments. Blackheads occur when the pore is only partially blocked. The black dot is caused by the skin’s pigment and the oxygen mixing and reacting, not dirt.
Papules are the large red swollen bumps that have no discernible head. These are the most likely to lead to acne scars of squeezed or messed with. It is best to leave them alone.
Pustules are the most common from of acne. They are usually red, round, and swollen and form a white or yellow head. After they form their head they look completely poppable, however it is always best to avoid popping to avoid acne scars.
Nodules are a from of sever acne. Nodules are large and swollen, much like postules, but tend to last much longer and be quite painful. Attempting to pop this type of acne will almost certainly lead to acne scarring.
Cysts are similar to nodules with the exception of being filled with pus and are often around 5nn in diameter. They last a long time, but squeezing them makes them last sometimes months longer. Cysts are another form of sever acne and sever acne should be treated by a dermatologist. These, as well, can be quite painful.
When you understand the various types of acne that occur, it is easier to determine which acne treatment is best for you. Cysts and nodules are severe acne that may require a dermatologist and a prescription, although there have been those with severe acne that claim some over the counter acne treatments have worked on severe acne.
Your treatment should always start with a mild cleanser. Acne medications that work the best usually contain 2.5% benzoyl peroxide. There are treatments available with a higher concentration such as 10%, but these really only achieve irritation to the skin. No evidence has been shown that higher concentrations reduce acne any better or have any effect on acne scarring.
Start your acne treatment with small doses and work your way up over a period of two weeks to additional doses. Even normal skin may need a chance to adjust to the benzoyl peroxide.
The third step is to moisturize. Even if your skin is oily, treatments can be remarkably drying and irritating to the skin. Using a gentle, non-oily moisturizer will help keep skin in balance and prevent reddening and flaking that benzoyl peroxide encourages.
